Description:
The C. Paul Phelps Correctional Center Art Behind Bars program introduces artistically talented offenders to formal art education training and artistic opportunities and helps them to find therapeutic alternatives to drugs and alcohol.
Through the transformative power of music and art, offenders tap into natural talents and gifts that were buried due to past history and involvements. We believe this program gives offenders one more re-entry tool to keep them out of crime and more involved in constructive, creative and potentially financial beneficial endeavors. We believe by offering the opportunity of artistic expression during a time of positive change in their lives, it will place them on an alternate path in life away from past behaviors. This program is sponsored by the Arts and Humanities Council of Southwest Louisiana and the DeQuincy Garden Club.
During the next few months "Art Behind Bars" is displaying arts and crafts and various pieces of art portraying Louisiana. Also, Doug Doty, a local artist, is displaying art. Both the art group and local artist will refresh their art during the month.
