Mayor Nic Hunter Presents a Canvas Representing Cultural Preservation
to Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser at the Louisiana Travel Summit

LAKE CHARLES, La. (August 22, 2018)—Mayor Nic Hunter of Lake Charles presented a fleur-de-lis canvas to Louisiana Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser during the Louisiana Lt. Governor’s Travel Summit held at the Golden Nugget on Wednesday, Aug. 22.

The canvas was produced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of CODIFlL, an organization that enhances the development of French in Louisiana. The total efforts raised $25,000 to boost the Cajun French Music Association scholarship for McNeese State University.

“The Cajun and Creole cultural heritage are intriguing to visitors, and it is exciting to see the City of Lake Charles championing French language proliferation which ultimately supports the cultural economy and the tourism industry in Louisiana,” said Shelley Johnson, executive director of the Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention & Visitors Bureau (LC/SWLA CVB).

“This scholarship directly benefits local students, here at home, while supporting a very worthwhile organization that works so hard to promote and develop our unique French language and Cajun French heritage,” said Mayor Nic Hunter of Lake Charles.

The LC/SWLA CVB is the cohost of the Louisiana Travel Summit which brought in nearly 600 attendees for the largest educational opportunity for tourism professionals in the state.

The state welcomed a record 47.1 million visitors in 2017, representing an increase of nearly 500,000. The travel and tourism industry generated $1.8 billion in state and local sales tax revenue. For Calcasieu Parish, that is over $732 million dollars added to the local economy.
