Big news! The City of Lake Charles is proud to announce the completion of Mallard Golf Club, a Scottish links-inspired golf course designed by Jeff Blume. So, that means … Mallard Golf Club is ready “fore” golfers to try out the links! Tee time bookings are now available! The name “Mallard” might be familiar as the former Mallard Cove course was located near Chennault. So, be sure to make a note of the new location at Morgan Field off E. McNeese St. The course will be open for play with a soft opening for the month of October, but beginning Saturday, Oct. 9, tee times will be available on weekends throughout the month on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. November brings more tee times available – transitioning to a 6-day schedule.
Strolling out onto the course, I was struck by the natural beauty that was preserved in the building of this championship golf course. As soon as I got into one of the golf carts, a white egret took flight and soared across the sky. There are several pockets of natural wetlands tucked in throughout the course, (2-3 acres) which allows for beautiful background foliage and wildlife that adds to the experience. The course also showcases 20 acres of lakes.
This Championship golf course features five sets of tee boxes, elevated greens, and rolling hills. The golf course is surrounded by native areas and no trees to produce a true Scottish links experience that will be unique to Louisiana. The golf course was designed to have fast firm fairways for the maximum roll with generous landing areas, providing a truly unique experience to the golfers of Lake Charles that will challenge the best golfers while also appealing to higher handicap players. Longtime PGA Professional, Johnathan Jester has been selected as Mallard Golf Club’s first Golf Professional, and he brings a wealth of experience from the Lake Charles area and is excited to lead the City’s newest amenity.
The CEO of Sterling Golf Management, Rene Rangel, said that Mallard Golf Club is the nicest municipal course in the state. The course features PGA quality grass (Celebration bermudagrass and TifEagle bermudagrass), 101 bunkers, and is the only public driving range in Lake Charles.
The greens are all elevated for turf growth, and a lighter green so that the ball can roll. Artificial turf will be added to the front of the range. Mallard Golf Club is using Better Billy Bunker technology for the bunkers, and they built it so that high school golfers can play at the back of the range, even on busy days. The course now features new ClubCar Golf Carts equipped with GPS and Bluetooth capabilities.
The clubhouse will take 12-14 months to build after a bid is accepted and construction begins (so early to mid-2023). Mallard Golf Club is building an awning off the cart barn now for seating while the clubhouse is built. For tournaments in the next year, they plan to utilize the cart barn and awning for open-air seating and bring in food trucks for players and guests. There is a temporary pro shop in the cart barn which will soon feature all-new branded merchandise.
