Fluctuations: An Installation of Handmade Paper at Historic City Hall
Historic City Hall Arts and Cultural Center will host an opening reception for “Fluctuations: An Installation of Handmade Paper” on Friday, August 31 from 5:30-8 PM. Artist, Meghan Fleming will be present for a meet and greet, admission is free and refreshments will be served. The exhibit will be on view through October 27, 2018.
Meghan Fleming became interested in handmade paper about 5 years ago. She used abaca fiber (a cousin of the banana plant) and a Western style of papermaking to create the elements for this exhibition. Working with beaten abaca, Fleming pulled the pulp using a mold and deckle (a screen and frame), transferred the drained pulp onto a felt, and pressed it to create a sheet of paper. Working with the freshly pressed, wet sheets she cut and constructed them into various forms--either leaving them separate or joining them to other forms. This process was repeated hundreds of times. If the pieces required color, the pulp was pigmented before making the sheet of paper. When the paper dried, the compositional work began—pieces were arranged and finally adhered to the panels.
Born in Southern California, Meghan Fleming received a BA in Studio Art from Smith College and an MFA in Painting from Indiana University. She is the recipient of a Louisiana Division of the Arts fellowship, a US Department of Agriculture – Natural Resources Conservation Grant, and several endowed professorships. Her work is featured in the book “Expressions of Place: The Contemporary Louisiana Landscape by John Kemp” (University Press of Mississippi, 2016). Fleming is currently an Associate Professor of Visual Arts at McNeese State University.
