The 2020 Virtual Mayor’s Arts Awards ceremony which will be presented over social media in a series of videos during the week of December 7-13. The Mayor’s Arts Awards honors those working in the arts by recognizing the contributions of Southwest Louisiana’s creative workers, patrons, and artists to the region’s culture. Mayor Nic Hunter will present the awards to each recipient.

“In a city with a vibrant arts and cultural scene on colorful display at countless annual festivals and special events, 2020 has been an exceptionally difficult year,” said Lake Charles Mayor Nic Hunter. “From COVID-19 to back-to-back hurricanes, our talented artists, who we rely on to enhance the quality of life in our community, have suffered tremendously. It is more important than ever that we recognize their contributions so we are thrilled to adapt and present the Mayor’s Arts Awards virtually.”

The categories include Artist of the Year, Citizen of the Arts, Citizen of the Humanities, Arts Educator of the Year, Arts Organization of the Year, and Patron of the Year. The Keystone Award is also given to an individual who works diligently behind the scenes, without whom programs and performances would not be possible.

Award winners are chosen by an independent panel and the recipients will be notified individually. In an effort to uphold COVID-19 safety precautions, the recipients will meet with Mayor Hunter, Devan Corbello, and Morgan Turpin, the Arts & Humanities Council’s board president, in a private ceremony that will be filmed and released over social media.

The event is sponsored by The City of Lake Charles and the Arts & Humanities Council of SWLA.
