Country music legend Willie Nelson will perform on Friday, March 9 at 8:30 PM in the Grand Event Center at Golden Nugget Lake Charles. Nelson rose to fame with the critical and commercial success of his albums Shotgun Willie, Red Headed Stranger and Stardust. Nelson was one of the early “outlaws” of country music along with Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard, who popularized a subgenre of country music in the 1970s and early 1980s. He performed as one of The Highwaymen with Cash, Kristofferson and Jennings.
Nelson has been honored with 11 Grammy Awards, 7 American Music Awards, 9 CMA Awards and 5 ACM Awards. The Country Music Association instituted the Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 which is given annually to an artist that has impacted Country Music and has exhibited a lifetime of philanthropy and contributions to humanitarian efforts. Nelson’s best known songs include “On the Road Again”, “Always On My Mind”, “To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before” and “Blue Eyes Cryin’ in the Rain”.
