The 12th Night Revelers were formed in 1991 by Anne Monlezun. The purpose of the Twelfth Night Revelers is to spread the true meaning of Mardi Gras. The Revelers act as a red carpet committee to promote the flavor and style of Mardi Gras throughout the year, for Southwest Louisiana. Members represent Imperial Calcasieu, which consists of the 5 parish area, Allen, Beauregard, Calcasieu, Cameron, and Jefferson Davis.
Twelfth Night is a festival, in some branches of Christianity, marking the coming of the Epiphany and concluding the Twelve Days of Christmas. Twelfth Night kicks off a season of parades, balls (some of them masquerade balls), and king cake parties. It has traditionally been part of the winter social season; which at one time was when parties for Southern Society women, débutante balls, were arranged.
Second line is a tradition in brass band parades in southern Louisiana. The "main line" or "first line" is the main section of the parade made up of members of the actual club with the parading permit as well as the brass band. Those who follow the band just to enjoy the music are called the "second line." The second line's style of traditional dance, in which participants walk and sometimes twirl a parasol or handkerchief in the air, is called "second lining."
