Alternative boat launch sites to access Sabine refuge marshes west of Highway 27 are available from the southern parking lot at West Cove Recreation Area, Hog Island Gully Recreation Area, and Northline Recreation Area. The marshes east of Highway 27 and West Cove of Calcasieu Lake may be accessed from the eastern most boat launch at Hog Island Gully Recreation Area, however, parking is limited. Additional off refuge boat launches may be found at https://www.visitlakecharles.org/creole-nature-trail/fishing/boat-launches/.
The long term benefits of this project when it is completed will outweigh the temporary inconvenience of the closure. This partnership project between the The Nature Conservancy and US Fish and Wildlife Service will restore one mile of oyster reef habitat, directly protect 20 acres of marsh shoreline, and conserve the integrity of up to 350 acres of adjacent coastal marsh between the reef and Highway 27, which serves as a major hurricane evacuation route. The public’s cooperation during this closure is appreciated. For more information about the closure or Sabine National Wildlife Refuge please call 337-762-3816.
