Central School Open House & Art Market

The City of Lake Charles and the Arts Council invite the public to visit the Central School Arts and Humanities Center on Thursday, December 5th, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. for a festive Holiday Open House. From top to bottom, Central School will glow with the joy of the holiday season with extensive Christmas lighting and holiday ornamentation. Visitors will be able to experience the facility's rich heritage as a comprehensive arts center and learn about the arts organizations, programs, and events that Central School houses throughout the year.

In rooms 106 and 108 the Holiday Art Market will return from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday and from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, and it will offer an array of fine and handmade items by local artists, with 10% of the proceeds helping to fund scholarships for local children attending the Calcasieu Parish School Board Arts Camp.

Among some of the displays guests can expect to see are a Nutcracker Exhibit in the Art Associates Gallery, "You Can't Stop the Art," a student art exhibit from SOWELA Technical Community College in the Black Heritage Gallery, and fine watercolor and mixed media pieces from Dewey Fine Art. The Children's Theatre Company and Itinerant Theatre will also give sneak peeks of performances, and the S.J. Welsh Art Club will sell handmade artwork to raise funds for the student club.

Central School's arts organizations, museums, galleries, and studios, including the Mardi Gras Museum, the Lake Charles Symphony, and the Literacy Council, will open their doors to showcase the arts initiatives that Central School has helped to incubate.

Donation stations will be set up at the buildings main entrance for art supplies (crayons, makers, paint, pencils, etc.) which will be donated to a school in need. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. For details, contact the Arts Council at 439-2787.
