Children's Day Offers Family-Friendly Mardi Gras Festivities
in Southwest Louisiana

LAKE CHARLES, La.(December 18, 2012)-Children's Day, a free event open to children ages 3 to 11, combines Mardi Gras fun with culture, music and learning on Sunday, Feb. 10, from noon to 3 p.m. at the Lake Charles Civic Center Exhibition Hall.

Children's Day includes exhibitions of performing arts, technology and science, safety and health, and arts and crafts-all interactive and hands-on. The event coordinates with other public Mardi Gras events such as Taste de la Louisiane and the Children's Parade at 3:30 p.m. that day that offer entertainment and culture to the public at the Lake Charles Civic Center.

Typical activities for Children's Day include an education station, making Mardi Gras arts and crafts while learning about the traditions and history of the carnival season and more. Groups present cultural and historic experiences of Mardi Gras and each year, children have the opportunity to be photographed in a costume display sponsored by the Mardi Gras Museum of Imperial Calcasieu and take home free souvenirs from vendors and sponsors.

Area corporate sponsors donate funds, food, drinks, and in-kind services. Entertainment includes colorful characters such as jesters, dance groups, and promenading pageant queens. Each child is served traditional king cake and takes home a bag of souvenirs.

The event is a gift to the community from Mardi Gras of Southwest Louisiana, Inc., and area sponsors, passing on deeply-rooted Mardi Gras traditions to the younger generation and allowing an opportunity for the corporate and volunteer community to share time and expertise with the area's children. At Children's Day, approximately 2,500 children and their families experience the richness of culture and history mixed with the excitement of Mardi Gras in a family-oriented, safe, wholesome environment.

Children's Day relies mostly on corporate sponsorship and donations for funding and upon the local media for public service announcements and promotions.

Mardi Gras of Southwest Louisiana would not be possible without the help of generous sponsors including the Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention & Visitors Bureau, L'Auberge Casino Resort, KPLC, Thrive, and AdSource Outdoor Advertising.
