Lake Charles Named "City of the Year" by Acadiana Profile
Result of CVB's Culinary Media Tour

LAKE CHARLES, La. (Feb. 7, 2013)-Hosting travel media throughout the year as well as for specific media tours such as Mardi Gras or the fall culinary tour, are components in the overall marketing plan for the Lake Charles/Southwest Louisiana Convention & Visitors Bureau so that potential visitors can learn about the area and get inspired to visit. Laura Claverie, a freelance journalist, participated in the culinary tour in October of 2012, and her experience encouraged her to write an ambitious five page feature story Southwest Louisiana.

Claverie wrote a story entitled "Lake Charles - Explosive Growth that Didn't Happen by Accident." This story was featured in the February/March edition "Acadiana Profile," with a designation that Lake Charles was chosen as "Acadiana's City of the Year."

The article is an in depth look at the area highlighting industry, the economy, history, culinary delights, new developments, arts and culture, festivals, outdoor recreation and casino gaming. The message focuses on what makes the area successful on a leadership level and how important community partnerships are for moving a community toward a brighter future.

"We work very hard to bring in travel media throughout the year. We strategically pitch to publications as well as travel media to entice them to experience our area and produce colorful stories on what makes Southwest Louisiana a fantastic place to visit and live. We work with our partners in tourism across the community to plan itineraries that complement their stories, and we work around the clock while the travel media is in town," said Shelley Johnson, executive director.

"We build longstanding relationships with journalists that result in friendships and ultimately additional stories oftentimes, which is another rewarding aspect of our jobs. Social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook are other avenues where we engage with media professionals on a day to day basis and share ideas," said Megan Monsour Hartman, senior marketing manager.
