Three practical tools from the Visit Lake Charles & Community Foundation of Southwest Louisiana partnership.
CASE STUDY: Just Imagine SWLA is a 50-Year Resilience Master Plan for Calcasieu and Cameron Parishes, developed with extensive community participation after Hurricanes Laura and Delta.
TOOL 1 | THE DECISION FRAMEWORK
- Mission alignment: Does this connect to visitation, the destination brand and economic impact?
- Brand fit: Does it reinforce or authentically expand the destination story?
- Visitation connection: Can you draw a credible line to how visitors experience, perceive or choose the destination?
- Capacity check: Can you do it well without pulling staff, budget or bandwidth from core tourism work?
KEY REMINDER: A good cause is not automatically the right fit.
TOOL 2 | GOVERNANCE & ROLE DEFINITION
- Define the lanes: What do we own? What do we support? What are we not responsible for?
- Document expectations: Put roles, deliverables and compensation in writing.
- Protect the core mission: Build the partnership around existing strategic priorities, staff capacity and budget.
- Revisit as needed: Use regular check-ins so roles can evolve without quiet scope creep.
KEY REMINDER: Saying yes is just the beginning; structure keeps the partnership from unraveling
TOOL 3 | COMMUNICATIONS-FIRST APPROACH
- Integrated, not isolated: Build the initiative into existing channels, editorial standards and storytelling systems rather than treating it as a separate communications universe.
- Visitor-connected: Show how community improvements connect to resident experience, visitor perception and the destination’s long-term appeal without forcing every story into a traditional tourism message.
- Channel-smart: Match each story to the channel that fits it best - earned media, social, newsletters or stakeholder communications.
- Editorially selective: Not every project update needs content. Prioritize what is timely, relevant to the audience and clearly connected to the mission.
- Measured for impact: Track reach, engagement, clicks, audience growth and earned media, then use the results to refine the strategy and demonstrate value.
KEY REMINDER: Integrate the work, do not isolate it.
