January in Southwest Louisiana is packed with action, energy, and plenty of reasons to get out and celebrate our competitive spirit. From cheering courtside at McNeese men's and women’s basketball games to experiencing the thrill of the Southwest District Livestock and Rodeo, there’s something for everyone this month.

McNeese Men’s Basketball
The McNeese Cowboys, led by head coach Will Wade, are on a mission to reclaim the Southland Conference Championship title—and they’re encouraging the community to be part of the journey. With fans filling the stands decked out in blue and gold and ready to cheer on their team, the electric atmosphere at the Legacy Center is unmatched.
This month’s matchups include:
Jan 18: McNeese Cowboys vs. Lamar – The rivalry game of the month! Expect a packed house as the Cowboys take on the Cardinals for the battle of the border!
Jan 20: McNeese Cowboys vs. Stephen F. Austin – A high-stakes showdown against a tough opponent.
These games are more than basketball- they’re a community celebration. Fans can enjoy interactive games and giveaways during breaks and halftime, performances by the spirited McNeese cheerleaders and Cowgirl Kickers, and a variety of food and drink options, including local favorites to savor while you watch.
The McNeese Cowgirls are also lighting up the court this season, bringing determination and skill to every game. The Legacy Center’s excitement during women’s basketball makes it a perfect outing for families and friends.

Southwest District Livestock and Rodeo
If basketball isn’t enough to get your adrenaline pumping, the Southwest District Livestock and Rodeo is back at the Burton Complex for three days of non-stop action and fun. This event combines the spirit of the Old West with the charm of Cajun traditions, offering a lineup of activities that promise excitement for everyone, such as scenic trail rides, rodeo events, opportunities to meet rodeo royalty during autograph sessions, and even free breakfasts, festive parades, and lively celebrations that welcome the whole community.
On Thursday, Jan 30, the Western Heritage Rodeo Parade will fill the streets of Lake Charles with music, floats, and plenty of rodeo spirit. Starting at 5 PM at the corner of Lagrange and Patrick Streets, the parade winds through town, ending at McNeese Stadium. Be sure to line the streets early to grab a great spot for this lively event!
Other fun, family-friendly events happening during the rodeo include:
Thursday, Jan 30, at 7:30 PM – Opening night includes Mutton Bustin’, where young cowboys and cowgirls test their grit, sponsored by Texas Roadhouse and Justin Boots.
Friday, Jan 31, at 7:30 PM – Hall of Fame Inductees will be honored during intermission, celebrating the legends of Southwest Louisiana rodeo.
