Martin Luther King, Jr. Festival
The MLK Coalition announces plans for Martin Luther King Jr. Festival, which will be held January 18-21, 2019. Celebrating it's 35th year, this festival honors the courageous efforts and sacrifices of Martin Luther King Jr. The MLK Festival is sponsored by the MLK Coalition, The Vibe 105 Foundation and KZWA 104.9 FM. The festival helps to create scholarships for area students to defray the cost of attending college. It also pays homage to local leaders who exude King’s ideas of “Peace, Justice and Brotherhood.”
The annual Memorial Breakfast will kick off the festivities, saluting outstanding individuals in the community. In addition, there will also be a MLK Community 5K Run/3 Mile Walk and a MLK Health and Awareness Fair, to increase health awareness, education and physical activity. Last year’s inaugural walk was comprised of an array of community service organizations, health based businesses and spectators. The festival will also include a MLK Community Clean-Up, partnering with local community leaders, businesses, politicians, local celebrities, and the Greek community to help us clean our beautiful city.
The celebration continues on Monday, January 21, with the Family Day Festival, which includes the Annual Parade, Zydeco, R&B, Blues, and Southern Soul Music. There will also be a Celebrity Gumbo Cook Off Contest, local vendors, exhibits, arts & crafts, and Creole and Cajun food. Those wearing Commemorative MLK T-Shirts are invited to march in the parade. All Family Day events are free.
