Imperial Calcasieu Museum

Beneath the sweeping canopy of the 375-year-old Sallier Oak, one of Louisiana’s most iconic and beloved live oaks, the Imperial Calcasieu Museum invites visitors on a journey through time. The museum tells the story of the five-parish Imperial Calcasieu region, showcasing its evolution from Native American settlements to a hub of modern industry.

Inside the museum’s main building and annex, guests will find a dynamic mix of permanent exhibits, rotating displays, and a locally sourced gift shoppe filled with handcrafted items from regional artists. The museum also hosts weekly events that bring the community together to celebrate local culture, history, and the arts.

Permanent Exhibitions

  • Ripples: Imperial Calcasieu Parish’s Waterborne History: This signature exhibit explores how waterways have shaped the region’s identity — from hand-pulled ferries and steamboats to the global port operations we see today. It's a fascinating look at how water has carried the story of Southwest Louisiana for generations.

  • Hall of Heroes: Step into this moving tribute to the men and women of the U.S. military. The exhibit spans from the Civil War to modern-day conflicts, honoring the sacrifices and courage of those who have served across generations.

Residency at the Museum

Launched in 2023, the Residency at the Museum (RATM) is a nine-month program designed to support and elevate local artists by providing dedicated studio space, funding and resources to pursue new work, and marketing support tailored to their artistic niche. During their residency, artists become part of a thriving creative network in downtown Lake Charles, engaging with arts professionals, collaborating with local organizations, and gaining exposure through two group exhibitions held the following year—one at the Imperial Calcasieu Museum and another at Historic City Hall Arts & Cultural Center.

DeQuincy Railroad Museum

Adjacent to the museum is a family-friendly park complete with playground equipment, a covered pavilion, and picnic tables, making it an ideal stop for families.

Every spring, the museum becomes the centerpiece of the Louisiana Railroad Days Festival, held annually in April. This beloved local event transforms the museum grounds into a lively celebration of DeQuincy’s railroading roots, complete with live music, festival food, parades, and entertainment for all ages. The festival draws visitors from across the region, creating a unique blend of small-town charm and community pride that showcases the enduring importance of Louisiana’s railroad heritage.
