The Legal Side of Getting Married

You have planned all the fun aspects of getting married, but you cannot forget about the legal aspect! Getting your marriage license is a relatively easy process, but there are several steps involved.

The most important thing to note is you have to purchase your marriage license at least 24 hours prior to the ceremony. However, the license will expire 30 days from the date of issuance. So, you have to find that sweet spot between 1-30 days prior to your wedding.

There are several ways you can apply for a marriage license. You can fill out the electronic form on the Calcasieu Parish Clerk of Court’s website. You can print the application at home and bring it to the clerk’s office. Or you can complete the application at the clerk of court’s office.

You will need the following information to complete the application:

  1. Full names of both parties
  2. Date of Birth for both parties
  3. Places of birth for both parties
  4. Number of previous marriages, if any
  5. Date last marriage ended, if applicable
  6. Social Security Numbers of both parties

It is also important to note that while we are still practicing social distancing due to COVID-19, you must make an appointment at the Clerk of Court’s office before arriving. They only make appointments between 9 AM and 3 PM and both parties must be present to sign the marriage license.

For full details, to fill out the online application, or to make your appointment please visit the Clerk of Court’s website. The Calcasieu Clerk of Court’s office also provides a handy checklist on their site so you will know you have everything you need including the supporting documentation!
